CHANGES IN COGNITION AND NEUROCOGNITION WHEN THINKING ALOUD DURING DESIGN

چکیده
Abstract The think-aloud protocol provides researchers an insight into the designer's mental state, but little is understood about how thinking aloud influences design. study presented in this paper sets out to measure cognitive and neurocognitive changes designers when aloud. Engineering students (n=50) were randomly assigned or control group. Students outfitted with a functional near-infrared spectroscopy band. asked design personal entertainment system. group spent significantly less time designing. Their sketches included fewer words. also required more resources left right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). DLPFC often recruited for language processing, involved visual representation problem-solving. faster depletion of may have contributed Thinking cognition neurocognition, these effects are only now becoming apparent. More research adoption neuroscience techniques can help shed light on differences.

Cultural Cognition in the Thinking-Aloud Method for Usability Evaluation
We discuss the impact of cultural differences on usability evaluations that are based on the thinking-aloud method (TA). The term ‘cultural differences’ helps distinguish differences in the perception and thinking of Westerners (people from Western Europe and US citizens with European origins) and Easterners (people from China and the countries heavily influenced by its culture). We illustrate ...

متن کاملThinking Aloud Influences Perceived Time
OBJECTIVE We investigate whether thinking aloud influences perceived time. BACKGROUND Thinking aloud is widely used in usability evaluation, yet it is debated whether thinking aloud influences thought and behavior. If thinking aloud is restricted to the verbalization of information to which a person is already attending, there is evidence that thinking aloud does not influence thought and beh...

—M. TED BOREN AND JUDITH RAMEY, ASSOCIATE MEMBER, IEEE Abstract—Thinking-aloud protocols may be the most widely used method in usability testing, but the descriptions of this practice in the usability literature and the work habits of practitioners do not conform to the theoretical basis most often cited for it: Ericsson and Simon’s seminal work PROTOCOL ANALYSIS: VERBAL REPORTS AS DATA [1].
